John Benjamin Thornton, a man from New Mexico, was arrested after sending text messages to friends and others claiming that he was a leader of a militia movement in the United States that would start a revolution and “execute Joe Biden for Treason,” CNN reports.
Thornton was being held on preliminary charges of using interstate commerce communications to send a threat to injure another person and being held without bail in the Doña Ana County Jail. He’s scheduled for a remote preliminary hearing on Friday.
Claiming that he “taking leadership of revolutionary Army called the the [sic] 3%ers,” Thornton had texted numerous people, saying he was a “revolutionary war general” who would be promoted to “5 stars after I execute Joe Biden for Treason.”
Thornton texted others bizarre conspiracy theories, claiming a Canadian company could “[t]unnel into the Brainwaves of ALL Methamphetamine users Brainwaves, globally.” Thornton said he would “shotgun execute every single one of [the company’s employees].”
“Thornton has been the subject of complaints since November 11, 2020, by several persons who have received messages characterized as disturbing or threatening since that time,” according to the complaint.
He becomes the second known case of a person arrested for threatening President Biden. In February, a North Carolina man was arrested and charged with knowingly and willfully making threats to take the life of and inflict bodily harm upon the President after making numerous phone calls to the White House switchboard to convey the threats.
