Carey Jon Walden, a Marine veteran from Kansas City, Missouri, gave the FBI a detailed accounting of how he breached the walls of the Capitol on January 6th, including signing off on photos he took of himself that day, in what appears to be the most helpful confession the FBI has received from an insurrectionist.
According to the FBI’s filing with the Court, Walden uses the photos and video he took to detail his actions during the January 6th attack on the Capitol, telling the interviewing agent that he went into the building through a broken window and took photos and video when he got inside.
“I walked in a 15 SQ FT, area, witch [sic] there were police in a line guarding a passage way. I took pictures and video. I did not break anything,” Walden wrote in what reads almost like an essay from a schoolboy on “What I Did During My Field Trip.” “The police were present and I was not asked to leave. I fist bumped and ‘Devil horned’ the swat line. I left after about 5 minutes.”
Walden noted on photographs shows to him by agents that he took the photos and posted them on Facebook. He also provided agents with two videos he took while in the Capitol.
Walden was arrested May 28th in Kansas City. He faces three charges: knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; disorderly or disruptive conduct at any place in the grounds or in any of the Capitol buildings; and parade, demonstrate, or picket in any of the Capitol buildings. He’s scheduled for a court appearance on August 11th.
