A heat dome is engulfing the West Coast of the United States, spiking temperatures in some areas surrounding Seattle to over 110 degrees, breaking the all-time high temperature ever recorded in the area, according to the Seattle Times. Simultaneously, the Southeast states are threatened with a tropical storm.
The normal average high temperature in Seattle in June is 71.1 degrees, but temperatures have been elevated throughout the Pacific Northwest and in regions of California. The heat dome forms when an area of hot air gets trapped by the jet stream. The dome stretches from British Columbia, Canada to Oregon, and then down on a straight line along the Sierra Nevadas.
