Iowa Republican Senator (and man so old he knew the Earth before oil existed) Chuck Grassley defended Donald Trump’s attempt to overthrow the free and fair November 2020 elections by claiming Trump was just soliciting opinions and he isn’t guilty of anything because he never actually did it.
“The President has every right to discuss ideas and strategies with his closest advisors,” Grassley claims, apparently ignorant of the Nixon presidency–and please not that Trump was not discussing Executive Branch policies; he was discussing political strategies.
“However,” Grassley continues unwisely, “the essential question that should be asked: what was the final decision? And that is my major concern with the public comments coming out of these interviews I have discussed relating to this new Trump investigation. … But let me remind the American public with a couple already public points. Did Trump fire acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen? No, he did not fire him.”
In Grassley’s mind, the fact that Donald Trump–who tried to abuse his office by using it to exert the office’s power over the political system–was thwarted by members of the Justice Department as he tried to subvert the Constitution shouldn’t be a big deal.
