Fugitive MAGA insurrectionist Evan Newman, who last year fled to Ukraine six charges over his participation in the Capitol riot before crossing into Belarus, has been granted asylum in the Putin-allied client state, Russian news agency Interfax reports. The Department of Citizenship and Migration of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Brest Regional Executive Committee approved Newman’s refugee status on Tuesday. “I feel safe in Belarus. I’m calm, I like it in the country. Today I have mixed feelings. I’m glad because Belarus took care of me. I’m upset because I found myself in such a situation that problems arose in my native country,” said Newman to Belarus state media.
Newman should feel safe indeed – for now. Things could be a little different in a few weeks, when Putin demands Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko send some warm bodies with rifles into Ukraine. Who better to put at the tip of the spear than a guy with real experience attacking a democracy? Newman should carry some sunflower seeds if that happens. We hear it’s good luck.
