All Ian Smith, a gym owner and Republican running for the Party’s nomination for the New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District, wanted to do after having a single margarita at a taco place was get home, but after his pickup was seen swaying over traffic lane lines, he got a visit from local police officers, who determined Smith was driving under the influence.
“You know I’m a congressional candidate for this district, right?” Smith tosses out as the cruiser he’s handcuffed in the back of rolls into the police station, possibly in a last ditch effort to save his nascent political career. Alas, it didn’t help: the owner of Atilis Gym was charged with drunk driving.
“He was angry,” Steve Kush, a spokesman for Smith, told NJ.com. “People sometimes say things out of anger. He was trying to make a point that, ‘hey I’m running for congress. I wouldn’t do something so stupid as to drive drunk.’”
