Odds are you don’t know who Ann Turner Cook is, but you’ve likely seen her picture. Cook, the original Gerber Food baby, appearing on millions of jars of baby food sold around the world, died last week, the Associated Press reports. She was 95.
“Many years before becoming an extraordinary mother, teacher and writer, her smile and expressive curiosity captured hearts everywhere and will continue to live on as a symbol for all babies,” Gerber announced on an Instagram post.
Cook was five months old when a neighbor made a charcoal sketch of her and submitted it to Gerber for a contest to find a marketing image. She remained anonymous–with urban legends claiming the image was Mickey Rooney, Humphrey Bogart and Elizabeth Taylor–until Gerber made her identity public in the late 1970s.
