The inaccurately named Liberal Democratic Party of Japan took a commanding share of seats in the upper house of the nation’s Parliament, securing an uninterrupted term as Prime Minister for incumbent Fumio Kishida, who will not have to stand for reelection until 2025, the Associated Press reports.
Part of Kishida’s platform for the remainder of his term included something he referred to as introducing “new capitalism,” an amorphous idea he did not detail.
The Liberal Democratic Party was led by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who was assassinated by a gunman who shot him twice with a homemade shotgun in a rare gun violence incident in the country.
