In an apparent reversal after several weeks of his and his close advisors threatening use of nuclear weapons on the battleground in Ukraine, Russian President appeared to blink in the glare of international condemnation, NBC News reports.
The Kremlin released a statement reaffirming its commitment to its long-standing policy on the use of nuclear weapons. “Russia is strictly and consistently guided by the tenet that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” said the statement on the Russian Foreign Ministry website, adding that the policy was unambiguous.
As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has become bogged down or even repelled in some areas, pundits and some government officials have pushed for the use of nuclear weapons, with some politicians openly questioning the Kremlin’s use doctrine.
