Republican Texas Secretary of State John B. Scott resigned his office Monday, fourteen months after taking office following the Republican legislature passing oppressive voter laws designed to suppress voter turnout, NBC News reports.
Appointed by Republican Governor Greg Abbott, Scott was charged with raising public confidence in a state-overseen election system that would void thousands of ballots in the 2022 election cycle because of problems with elections administration.
Upon his nomination, Scott stated that he believed the 2020 election was decided correctly, a statement that surprised some given he was briefly part of Donald Trump’s legal team trying to overturn the election results. While in office, Scott participated in an audit of the 2020 election that found the official results to be accurate.
