Trump criminal cabal special counsel Jack Smith has issued a series of subpoenas to state and county officials in Arizona, Michigan and Arizona for communications and records relating to Donald Trump’s campaign’s attempts to alter ballot counts to give him 2020 election victories in those states, the Washington Post reports.
Smith’s first round of subpoenas were served to officials over the past week: Dane County, Wisconsin; Maricopa County, Arizona; and Wayne County, Michigan. received theirs late last week, and Milwaukee got one Monday. The subpoenas for the Arizona and Wisconsin jurisdictions specifically mention Donald Trump in the document; it’s unclear if the Michigan one did as well, although Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson confirmed receiving a subpoena from Smith.
The subpoenas indicate that Smith is potentially expanding the previously existing Justice Department investigation into Trump and his allies’ effort to reinstall him in a second term even though he lost both the popular vote and the Electoral College tabulation; Trump et al intended to do this by undermining public trust in the integrity of election reporting by having local government officials refuse to certify factual election results. The goal was simply to sow chaos and distrust.
The disclosure of the subpoenas also shows that Smith’s efforts–which also include overseeing the investigation into Trump’s theft of government documents, including highly classified information, at his poorly-secured AirBnB and geriatric supper club Mar-a-Lago–go beyond the established areas of investigation.
