Now might the Republicans create a “carveout” to exempt the continuing resolution they’ve been unable to get the seven or so Dem votes they need to reopen the government? Yeah, it could happen if this goes on for another few weeks. It’s also certainly more germane to the current exemptions like those “Byrd Bath” vagaries that, for example, allowed the Big Beautiful Piece of Shit to pass with the 51 votes or whatever it got – unlike the carveouts for voting and abortion rights that Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema were bribed to block. But the thinking then and probably as it is now is that any further loosening is a slippery slope that leads to the next one.

Senate Republicans abso-freaking-lutely DO NOT want the maximal simple majority vote that Trump is agitating for here, because no matter what happens, unless they simply end elections, sooner or later it will bring about the EXACT shit Trump is screaming about here with the Supreme Court drastically reformed and remade, DC and Puerto Rico statehood, federalized elections, a national ban on partisan gerrymandering, amnesty and then citizenship for undocumented immigrants, so on and so forth. The grip that the GOP has through their geographic advantages and relentless propaganda machine is strong but also incredibly brittle – and they know it.
