In National Zero’s sorta-annual coverage of American gluttony: the reigning champions of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating… um… Spectacular (?) retained their titles, as Joey Chestnut at more than five dozen on the men’s side while Miki Sudo at 39.5 in the ten minute span, according to the New York Times.
Legendarily “held since 1916”–it was, in fact, started in the 1970s–the Coney Island contest was significantly disrupted as lightning and rain delayed the start of the men’s event by more than an hour and sent fans in metal grandstands scrambling for cover, with some crew being told to send the crowd home and break down the stage.
