Utah Gov Spencer Cox on Tuesday responded to concerns raised by the attorney for a death row inmate set to be executed Thursday morning, assuring the lawyer that the lethal injection will be conducted in a safe and professional manner so no need for delay, the Utah News Dispatch reports.
“The Department has gone above and beyond in planning and preparing for Mr Honie’s execution. It is my understanding that the majority of concerns in your request were previously raised in court. In fact, in reviewing these concerns, the court found the Department has provided Mr Honie with more than the law requires,” Cox wrote to lawyers repping Taberon Honie, who was sentenced to death in 1999 for the savage murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother while three of the woman’s grandchildren were in the home. Honie also confessed to molesting one of the kids before he left the home.
The lawyers, who had complained that the state’s plan for the execution and the preparations in their bid for the delay, are just doing their job, but they should understand that the death row team at the prison are doing theirs too. Do they think those guys want to fill out a shit ton of paperwork and sit for hours of depositions if Honie spends his last moments foaming at the mouth and thrashing violently due to a bad cocktail coursing through his vessels? Jeez, just give them a chance. Plus if the prison fucks something up there’ll be plenty more billable hours to be had.
