Camp Mystic, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory of girls’ summer camps in Texas, will not be reopening this summer, USA Today reports on a stipulation that need be emphasized because, well, it was never up in the air whether the goddamned Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was ever going to reopen.
And not for lack of trying and then realizing that might have been a bad look because Texas officials confirmed to the outlet that the owners of the Christian camp at which 27 were killed – most of them campers – during the apocalyptic flash floods early last July 4th had put in the paperwork to reopen before withdrawing it on Thursday. The abrupt turnaround came just a day after a state legislative committee determined that yes, the horror, which nearly claimed the lives of Republican Congressman August Pfluger’s daughters, could have been prevented if staff had simply heeded the flash flood warning issued that night and evacuated before the deluge hit two friggin hours later.
“The anger at us for not being able to keep them safe feels completely reasonable. I have no excuses,” said Edward Eastland, a member of the scumbag family that owns and operated the camp, after the conclusion. It’s not clear if this was before or after they withdrew the paperwork to reopen this summer. Forget not sitting in court ahead of a 27-count negligent homicide case, as evidently these folks are white and conservative enough to escape real consequences, even just having the balls to keep on keeping on as though there isn’t blood of two dozen little girls on their hands.
Fuck man. This isn’t even to say there should never be a camp there, that a new name, new owner-operators who are competent and attuned to weather reports, and new cabins built on higher ground or pylons wouldn’t be enough. It’d be a shame to end a sacred place of childhood memories and all that sap. Absolutely someone with the means and track record of operating other camps should take over. But by God, the current owners need to be banned from the industry permanently and irrevocably if Texas won’t at least do the bare minimum of fucking prosecuting them.
