The CEO of the painfully generically-named Michigan-based “Family First Credit Union,” painfully generically-named Jane Smith, is no longer with the company after posting a pic depicting herself, husband, sister, and brother-in-law, wearing sweatshirts bearing the painfully generically-MAGA-renamed “Lake America,” the Guardian reports on a surprise resurgence of cancel culture.
Particularly obnoxious of Smith and her kin was that the real photo with the AI-slop added “Lake America” shirts was taken at Detroit’s airport on September 11th prior to the four departing for Halifax, Nova Scotia, a region of Canada that had on that day 25 years earlier opened their homes to thousands of Americans stranded when Transatlantic flights were diverted to Maritime Province airports. “Like our sweatshirts? Not sure Canada will… Lol lol” Smith wrote in the post.
“Jane Smith is no longer employed by Family First Credit Union, effective immediately. Jason Acosta will serve as interim CEO. We sincerely apologize for the concern, disappointment and pain this situation has caused our members and community. We understand that members of our community may hold different perspectives about this decision. Our responsibility is to act in the best interest of the Credit Union, uphold the trust of our members and continue putting our community first,” Family First wrote in the statement announcing Smith’s dismissal for her offensively anti-Canadian post.
Deafening is the silence from MAGAmerica turning Smith into a cause celebre like Nick Sandmann, Riley Gaines, Daniel Penny, and so on. Of course this could change, but it does not appear yet that Smith has been booked for any Fox News appearances, let alone being immediately hired to the c-suite of some right-wing coded crypto or silver bars operation. Sure, she apologized, telling Detroit station WJRT “I understand if I was someone in Halifax and I thought a poor group of people walked in wearing those sweatshirts, it is highly offensive and I would understand why they would be so angry,” but that doesn’t mean she can’t be talked into turning herself into a victim.
The fact of the matter is that it’s hard not to notice the non-outrage over Smith’s cancellation after so many thousands upon thousands of hours of right wing propaganda bullshit canonizing assholes like her into martyred saints – ESPECIALLY when it’s something so closely associated with convicted felon President Trump – and that in itself could very easily be read as yet another sign that the machine’s tank is running empty as the GOP’s confidence in its own appeal steadily ebbs.
