Tuesday marks six months since a horde of angry, desperate Trump fans stormed the United States Capitol in a doomed attempt to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s win over their Orange God Emperor. Almost from the start, MAGA Nation tried to act like it was no big deal, that it was a big deal but it was somehow Nancy Pelosi’s fault, but also it was still no big deal again.
What follows is a rundown of how GOP politicians, commentators, and trolls fought reality with unreality in the aftermath of that brutal assault on American democracy.
“It was Antifa”
This started on January 6th, as the goddamned riot was actually still happening. Per Michael Wolff’s upcoming third book on the Trump White House: ‘It wasn’t until later in the three o’clock hour that Trump seemed to begin the transition from seeing the mob as people protesting the election – defending him so he would defend them – to seeing them as ‘not our people.’ Therefore, he bore no responsibility for them” and it spread from there:

By mid-February the MAGA Reich started a half-assed attempt to make it sound like Nancy Pelosi was in charge and let the horde into the Capitol in a way very much reminiscent of how they charged another prominent female Democrat leader with failing to provide adequate security for a consulate in Libya, though the effort did not last nearly as long.

The “crowd was largely peaceful” bullshit technically started before the Capitol riot even happened. In Trump’s speech whipping up the MAGA horde into the attack, he did use the word “peacefully” in what was otherwise a maelstrom of violent rhetoric. Nice of him to throw his fans a life raft to cling to when trying to pretend the other 50 minutes or so of hateful shit did not incite the crowd.

️One thing I would say about January 6–it didn’t affect the average person very much. Just a few overpaid politicians who aren’t doing their jobs well.
