Led by a president who has dismissed the dangers of the coronavirus–although both he and his wife contracted the disease–Brazil has passed 3 million cases and 100,000 fatalities from the disease, according to worldometers.info.
Under President Jair Bolsonaro, the South American nation saw a sharp spike in cases and fatalities, reaching this milestone just three months after recording its first death.
The United State, with 30% more population than Brazil, reached the 100,000 fatality mark five months after recording its first death from coronavirus.
Bolsonaro has resisted issuing restrictions within the country to stop the spread of the virus. He went to far as to dismiss Brazil’s minister of health, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, in April after Mandetta publically contradicted Bolsonaro on proposed restrictions to stop the spread of the virus.
