Unvaccinated Greeks over the age of 60 will face a fine of €50 for January, increasing to €100 monthly starting in February, if they continue to hold out against COVID-19 shots, the Associated Press reports. Vax rates in the country that invented democracy and gyros have remained stubbornly low relative to its fellow European Union members as a COVID-19 variant named after one of their letters drives an increase in hospitalizations. About two-thirds of Greeks are vaccinated while the average for the EU is over 70%, and the rate is far lower among Greeks 65 and older – 41.5% are fully vaccinated, per the country’s health ministry. Greece Health Minister Thanos Plevris, who may or may not be twelve feet tall and purple, said the revenue collected would be used to fund public hospitals dealing with the surge in cases.
