“Harris holds thin lead over Trump”: The Hill on ABC News/WP poll

“Vice President Harris is holding a narrow lead over former President Trump ahead of the Democratic National Convention next week, according to a new poll. The ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll found Harris has 49 percent of support among registered voters while Trump has 45 percent and 5 percent said they would back someone else. This shows Harris pulling ahead, as a previous ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted last month showed President Biden and Trump tied at 46 percent of support each. Harris also holds a thin lead over Trump when third-party candidates are added to the mix. The poll showed Harris with 47 percent of support, Trump with 44 percent of support and independent Robert F Kennedy Jr with 5 percent,” The Hill reports in the lede to their article “Harris holds thin lead over Trump as DNC approaches: poll,” posted Sunday.

“Former President Trump opened up a 3-point lead over President Biden nationally following last week’s debate after the candidates were previously tied, according to a new poll. The Quinnipiac University survey, published Wednesday, found that Trump garnered 49 percent support to Biden’s 45 percent. That’s a significant improvement for the former president over last month’s survey, which found Biden with a single point lead,” The Hill also reported in an article titled “Trump pulls ahead of Biden in head-to-head match-up: National survey,” posted on June 26, 2024.

Funny how the wording changed between those two articles. Like the lead suddenly became “thin” when the leading candidate had changed – and that margin’s one point fatter than it had been.

Fat fucking idiot appears to think Taylor Swift just endorsed him, tells actually sort of believable “with tears in his eyes” story

We bet the Orange God Emperor accepts the endorsement he’s been so thirsty for these past six months or more since that pre-and-post-Super Bowl freakout over fears she would endorse Joe Biden just as she did in 2020… Except none of the screenshots of tweets he has here actually say she endorsed him and the first one literally says “SATIRE” in large bold letters on the image.

Some dumbass tried to bring 100 lbs of weed through customs

People Magazine is People Magazine, they were never not going to headline their article as “Ariana Madix’s Brother Jeremy Charged with Attempting to Bring 100 Lbs of Cannabis Through Airport Security,” focused on the fact that he’s related to a reality show actress rather than that anyone was fucking stupid enough to try and bring 100 lbs of marijuana with them on an international flight.

Still… Feels like other outlets should’ve picked this up and then buried his connection a few paragraphs down after the topline details plainly more universally newsworthy to general audiences.

The bust happened at Orlando International Airport in February when Madix, 32, stepped off the flight from Germany, but he wasn’t cuffed until he was extradited from California to Florida in July, and it was only this week when first reports of it surfaced when Madix’s attorney made a court filing asking the judge for a “reasonable bond.” Madix, whose sister is on some stupid bullshit reality show on Bravo, faces a minimum sentence of three years in prison and a fine of $25,000.

“The media uses fake polls to drive down Republican turnout”

Jaydee wasn’t having it on Sunday when Fox News’s Shannon Bream asked him to address the Washington Post/ABC News poll finding Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov Tim Walz with a pretty solid lead over Senator Couch Fucker and his angry orange boss, calling it all a media conspiracy to drive a narrative that fat Donald is once again doomed to a humiliating defeat.

Funny how he’s saying more or less the same thing we were before the tables largely turned after Harris’s ascension. Except for that we weren’t really calling Joe Biden’s mostly depressing poll numbers “fake” so much as skewed by response bias on both ends, specifically low enthusiasm for Biden and high enthusiasm from Trump fanboys. We also have like actual evidence that pollsters have been underrating Dems going back to before the midterms, even it’s an open question as to whether the same dynamic will apply to a national election with apocalyptic stakes for both sides.

But yeah, The Narrative™ is fucking insufferable. We feel Jaydee on this one. Irrespective of whether or not the polls are wrong, they’re finding Harris ahead and that leaves an impression on the people who do take them seriously. Like CBS News and YouGov who this morning put out a finding with Harris up 51 to 48 nationally among likely voters and 50/50 in the swing states. Sucks for him.

Indonesia celebrates independence day in unfinished new capital

Still only part of the way through the arduous process of ditching overcrowded, polluted, and sea level rise-prone Jakarta for a new capital they’re building from scratch in the jungles of Borneo, Indonesia’s leaders – outgoing President Joko Widodo and President-elect Prabowo Subianto – on Saturday rang in the nation’s independence day in the new seat of Nusantara, the AP reports.

“The celebration was initially planned to inaugurate Nusantara as the country’s new capital, but with construction behind schedule it’s not clear when the transfer will take place,” the AP writes, almost as if moving the national capital of a vast archipelago of 280 million people scattered across more than 17,000 islands pockmarked with explosive volcanoes and prone to apocalyptic earthquakes isn’t especially more complicated than following the building instructions on your typical LEGO set.

Of course it’s going to be a messy affair. Nobody with a functioning brain should think such a project would be. “Widodo said earlier in the week that 8,000 guests would be invited, but the number was later reduced to 1,300 because adequate infrastructure was not yet in place,” for the celebration ceremony in Nusantara, the AP writes. Okay, that sucks. It’s also 1,300 more than were there a few years ago. The coverage is like this at every outlet, and that’s not just fair but entirely necessary to report that there’s been a number of issues with getting the job done, but like what the fuck? Can’t anyone in the media at least make an attempt to appreciate that it was pretty freaking ballsy and that they’re well along the way to pulling it off despite the headwinds? How’s Elon’s Mars colony coming along? Is he still making moves like Indonesia is with Nunsatara?

Earthquake, volcanic eruption hit northeast Russian peninsula

It’s a difficult day for the people living on the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeast Russia.  First, a 7.0 earthquake hit in the middle of the night on Saturday (local time) and then a few hours later, the friendly regional volcano blows up, spewing a column of ash five miles into the air.

According to CNN, the epicenter of the quake was about 30 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the largest population center in the region where 179,000, more than half the area’s population, live.  The Shiveluch volcano, at more than 10,000 feet elevation, is the northernmost volcano in a chain on the peninsula.

Team Orange again stuck putting in weekend hours unskewing poll

“The latest Sun Belt swing state polls of Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada conducted by the New York Times and Siena are, once again, a perfect example of how wildly inaccurate recalled 2020 vote between President Trump and Joe Biden is being used to create a phony lead for Kamala Harris.”

“Fortunately, they proved our case for us this week, because they actually got Georgia right: among registered voters, they have a dead-even split between President Trump and Joe Biden on the recalled 2020 vote. As a result, President Trump leads Kamala Harris by 7 points (51-44) in the 2024 head-to-head matchup among all registered voters. Arizona and Nevada however look nothing like the 2020 reported results. If they did, President Trump would lead by 3 points (50-47) in Arizona and by 9 (53-44) in Nevada,” writes Trump campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio in another “This poll is bullshit” memo, the third time this month that he and/or the team have had to put in weekend hours Baghdad Bobbing a mainstream media poll’s findings. Boss must be getting pretty fucking angry.

Cornel West disqualified in Michigan, in trouble in Arizona

Russian asset Cornel West’s fake campaign has been disqualified from the ballot in Michigan for failing to respond to a challenge to the authenticity of his access petition, USA Today reports.

In Arizona, Phoenix woman Denisha Mitchell tells the AP she was surprised to find out she was named as an electoral college elector for West and will be submitting an affidavit to the state Attorney General’s office attesting that the paperwork filed in her name was forged. The AP tried to contact one of the other West electors, a registered Republican, but didn’t get an answer.

They did however find that the woman, Elizabeth Rothgeb, did 12 years in after pleading guilty to manslaughter in 1998 after hacking her husband to death with an axe. They also traced the effort to get West on the ballot to a California Republican operative named Mark Jacoby who was convicted in 2009 of voter registration fraud, according to court records. Big fucking surprise there.

While this might seem separate and apart from a petition canvassing scam, it would have the same effect in Arizona: Third party candidates are required by state law to name their EC electors in order to qualify for the ballot. If a judge rules Mitchell’s paperwork was invalid then Cornel is screwed. As a bonus, the MAGA shitbags responsible for the forgery are liable for felony charges.

Harris and Trump tight in Sun Belt states: NYT/Siena poll

A new New York Times/Siena College swing state survey of likely voters finds Vice President Kamala Harris leading convicted felon former President Trump 50 to 45 percent in Arizona and 49 to 47 in North Carolina while Trump leads 50 to 46 percent in Georgia and 48 to 47 percent in Nevada.

President Joe Biden’s campaign had pretty much given up on contesting these states.

Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXXXVI

  • Two billionaires laugh about firing workers, and then one of them descends the stairs from his clubhouse apartment at one of his private country clubs which new members pay seven figures to join so he can complain about the price of a box of Cheerios.  The disconnect from the lives of working Americans and their attempt to be the Everyman is absurd.
  • Those Presidential Medals of Freedom Trump says are just as respected as a Congressional Medal of Honor?  Well, Trump awarded 24 of them, more than half (13) went to professional athletes, coaches or sports franchise owners.  Golfers (4), including two non-Americans, got more than any other sport, more than doubling the number of golfers who had ever received the award since its inception in 1963. Y’know, those people who sacrificed for this nation on the sands of Pebble Beach, just like the sacrifice made by Audie Murphy or Travis Atkins.
  • I know the couch stories aren’t true, but I honestly thought Senator Guyliner would be more of a La-Z-Boy Republican.
  • Three US Presidents (Biden, Obama, and Clinton) will address the DNC in support of Kamala Harris, as well as the grandson of another (Carter).  So will two First Ladies (including one who was a former nominee/Senator/Sec’y of State) and the first Second Gentleman.  The Republican convention had… Trump.  That’s it.  There is no Republican legacy anymore; there is only Trump.

Statue of John Lewis to replace Confederate monument in Decatur

A bronze statue of civil rights activist and long-time Democratic Congressman John Lewis will be unveiled on August 24th in Decatur, Georgia, part of Georgia’s 5th Congressional District Lewis represented until his death four years ago.  NBC News reports that the 12-foot-tall figure will stand at the location in a park where a stone obelisk honoring the Confederacy stood for more than a century before being dismantled in 2020.

Teamsters president will not address DNC, but Harris will meet with union’s executives after Party convention

Even after hearing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who’s also a convicted felon, joke with supervillain-in-training Elon Musk about arbitrarily firing workers, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien has not slammed the door shut on endorsing the adjudicated rapist.  But according to the Washington Post, likely Democratic nominee Kamala Harris will meet with O’Brien and other Teamsters executives to secure the group’s support.

DNC planners say the Teamsters will be represented in the program but the specifics were not disclosed.  Angering some Democrats, O’Brien became a coup for Republicans when he broke years of precedent to speak at the Republican convention.  O’Brien will not be the speaker at the DNC according to sources.

It’s unclear when Harris will participate in the Teamsters’ roundtable given the convention starts next week.  The Teamsters traditionally choose to announce their endorsement after the end of both Parties’ conventions, so the Vice President could meet with the group the following week.

Stein will remain on Wisconsin ballot, officials rule

Perrenial third-party candidate Jill Stein can remain on the ballot in Wisconsin, a state panel ruled in dismissing a complaint by a Democratic National Committee employee who claimed the Green Party does not have proper state representation to assign presidential electors, the Associated Press reports.

The basis of the complaint is really weak and technical–according to the state constitution, electors can only be nominated by someone in the state legislature, and since the Green Party has no one in the legislature, no Green Party elector could be nominated–but the action is prudent given the last time Stein was on the ballot in Wisconsin, she got 31,000 votes and Trump won the state by 23,000.

George Santos in plea deal talks: report

Lying piece of shit Republican former Long Island Congressman George Santos is in talks with federal prosecutors to plea guilty to defrauding campaign donors, according to one of those victims who told Talking Points Memo that prosecutors said to expect the plea to come next week.

“They told me that he is pleading guilty on Monday,” the source said, adding, “He should be held completely accountable and he is, as far as I can tell, guilty of quite a bit. I know for certain that he lied to my face.” The now seriously in-doubt trial is for the moment set to begin September 16th.

Not big if true. Seriously. Like of course it’s newsworthy and funny that this freaking dipshit is finally going to become a convicted felon freaking 15 months and seven days after he was first indicted on 13 counts and then hit with a superseding indictment. But this is not the first nor the second time over the last year that we’re picking up reporting that Santos was nearing a plea deal – that second one coming just 10 days after he was expelled from the House. It’s a tricky and unsettled question as to whether Santos could have bargained away his seat in exchange for a more lenient sentence, but the point is he didn’t even try when that option was potentially, possibly available to him.

Former Fulton Co. election head files ethics complaint against three state board members who took bows at Trump rally

A former Fulton County, Georgia election chair filed a formal ethics complaint with Republican Georgia Governor Brian Kemp against three GOP members of the state election commission who were lauded by adjudicated rapist and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during a recent Atlanta rally.

Cathy Wo0lard, a former member of the state election commission herself, said current members Rick Jeffares, Janice Johnston, and Janelle King damaged the ability of the commission to objectively determine the outcome of the upcoming election after demonstrating their fealty to Trump during Trump’s Atlanta rally.  From the stage, Trump recognized the three individually noting that they would help tilt the election to him. Woolard also details how the three have ignored directives from state officials regarding changing election regulations and processes close to election dates and other deadlines.

“Their conduct raises concerns that the Board members are not fulfilling their duty to ensure the “fair, legal, and orderly conduct” of Georgia elections. On the contrary, they have created, at minimum, the appearance that their actions are intended to advance their own political preferences. The members have done nothing to dispel that appearance of impropriety, instead receiving a standing ovation at a Trump rally and openly discussing a position in the Trump administration. Taken together, these actions pose a serious risk of creating confusion about the rules governing the rapidly approaching election and undermining voter confidence in the integrity of Georgia’s elections,” Woolard wrote, noting the trio likely violated state codes by engaging in conduct that amounts to a breach of the public trust and failing to uphold the laws of the state.

Scammer continues to fleece flock, financial disclosure shows

Along with the hundreds of millions he’s collected from his political grift, convicted felon Donald Trump, the top of the GOP ticket, continues to profit from numerous licensing scams that circumvent detailed FEC reporting, but his latest financial disclosure shows the dupes keep duping.

Along with a whopping $7 million from NFT sales, Trump pocketed $300,000 for pitching a Lee Greenwood-produced leather-bound Bible that includes the founding documents of the United States, CBS News reports.  He also sucked up another $4.5 million from his other publishing ripoff, the coffee table book of letters people wrote to him.

It should also be noted that Trump has between one- and five million dollars in cryptocurrency according to the documents, something that will likely influence his campaign positions on regulation.
