Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has stated that she will recall the members of the House of Representatives from its recess to consider legislation to protect the US Postal Service, the New York Times reports.
The proposed legislation would keep USPS service levels at current levels until January 1st or until the national emergency because of the coronavirus pandemic is lifted. It would also require the Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, to testify before the House Oversight Committee in September.
The management of the Postal Service by DeJoy, a Trump ally and donor, has come under scrutiny as reports increase about efforts of USPS management to increase delivery time of mail and decrease efficiencies within the independent agency.
These efforts include reducing available overtime and removing postal equipment that speed delivery and reduce time-consuming manual labor. Recent reports include that the USPS is dismantling automatic sorting machines and removing mailboxes to collect mail.
The USPS recently sent letters to 46 states and the District of Columbia informing officials that the Postal Service may not be able to delivery mail-in ballots on time to be officially counted in the November election.
President Trump has complained, falsely, that voting by mail is fraught with fraud and manipulation. He’s blocked emergency funding for the USPS designed to alleviate financial constraints during election season, when a record number of people are expected to vote by mail due to the coronavirus pandemic.
