Chad Dorrill, a 19-year-old sophomore at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina died of complications from the coronavirus a week after being diagnosed, even though he was otherwise health and active, CNN reports.
Dorrill tested positive for the virus early in September and went through isolation. He was then cleared to return to college, where he lived off campus.
After returning to college, he started to experience symptoms and complications. His family brought him home, where he was hospitalized. He died later in the week.
Dorrill’s death raises questions about public health protocols put in place at colleges and universities, particularly the testing of students on or returning to campus.
The students have been attending a mix of on-line and in-person classes since school began in August. More than 600 students on the App State campus have tested positive for coronavirus since March.
