Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced in a letter to Democratic House members that she intends to pursue article of impeachment against Donald Trump, saying that he poses a threat to the nation, the Associated Press reports.
“In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this President represents an imminent threat to both,” she said. “The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.”
Pelosi said the House will act swiftly but with solemnity in presenting the impeachment articles before Trump loses his office on January 20th, replaced by President-elect Joe Biden. Trump will be the first President to be impeached twice.
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, the third-ranking Democrat, said that the House may vote on articles of impeachment but may hold giving them to the Senate for 100 days after Biden’s inauguration to allow Biden’s nominees and immediate agenda to pass through quickly, without delays from Senate Republicans.
Two Republican Senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, have both said that Trump should be removed from office, either through impeachment or resignation.
The Senate needs two-thirds of the votes of all Senators in the chamber to vote guilty for Trump to be found guilty, meaning if a significant number of Republicans boycott the vote, a smaller number could convict him. The Senate could then vote to exclude Trump from holding any federal office in the future.
