A man described as a “mercenary” political fundraiser who pleaded guilty to multiple felony counts including tax evasion, campaign finance violations and failing to register as a foreign agent has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by a federal judge, the Associated Press reports.
A contractor for Rudy Giuliani associate Dmitry Firtash, Imaad Zuberi raised millions of dollars for the campaigns of Donald Trump, Lindsey Graham, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, leveraging the standing he obtained to access to high levels of foreign government officials including those from Turkey, Sri Lanka and Ukraine.
The Los Angeles-based Zuberi is reportedly cooperating with federal officials in a probe of the Trump Inaugural Committee, for which he raised more than $900,000. He reportedly used the access to the Trump administration he gained through his contributions to lobby for a unspecified small gas-rich monarchy, according to court documents.
Zuberi reportedly sought the help of former Army general and one-time presidential candidate Wesley Clark for a scheme to help Firtash’s company. Firtash is a Putin-friendly Ukrainian oligarch currently fighting extradition from Russia to the United States on federal bribery and racketeering charges; Giuliani sought Firtash’s help to dig up dirt on Hunter Biden to damage the candidacy of President Joe Biden.
Along with the prison time, U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips ordered Zuberi to pay nearly $16 million in restitution and a nearly $2 million fine. The sentence comes after Trump pardoned numerous people including former campaign manager Paul Manafort and key fundraiser Elliott Broidy for similar crimes.
The sentence “sent a loud message that we have to stop such conduct to restore the public faith in our institutions,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. O’Brien told The Associated Press. “This case shows that foreign influence extends well beyond what has been frequently discussed in public discourse.”
