After crowdfunding site GoFundMe announced it was refunding monies raised to finance the occupation of Ottawa by people angry about Canadian government mandated vaccines and mask-wearing, a former American ambassador to Canada condemned US groups funding the protests, the Washington Post reports.
Bruce Heyman, a former U.S. ambassador under President Barack Obama tweeted, “Under no circumstances should any group in the USA fund disruptive activities in Canada. Period. Full stop.”
A campaign on GoFundMe had raised around $8 million before it was halted by the site. GoFundMe said they would refund the money to donors, and any funds they couldn’t refund would be donated to charity.
This itself caused consternation in misinformed conservative circles. Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis vowed to investigate the appropriation of funds by GoFundMe, apparently under the impression that the company was going to donate all the funds to a charity of its choice.
