The first pontiff in modern times to abdicate the position, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI died after a battle with cancer Saturday at a monastery in the Vatican. He was 95.
Born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger in Germany, Benedict entered the seminary at age 18 and rose through the ranks of the clergy, becoming Archbishop of Munich and Freising in 1977 and taking a key position in the Vatican in 1981 before being named Pope in 2005.
As his health declined, Benedict stepped down from his role as Pope at the end of February 2013, the first Pope to leave office since Gregory XII in 1415. Details of his funeral have not been announced.
