Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLIV

  • The single biggest mystery still surrounding January 6th is:  who is the bomber?  Yes, we joke that it’s Congress’s Three-toed embarrassment, but more than any case not directly involving Trump, this is the last major question that needs to be resolved.
  • Biden is fired up, and rightly so.  He’s not just battling for the office; he’s fighting for the future of the nation.  And as he said, Trump is fighting for his future only.
  • “You can have this office keycard when you pry it from my cold dead hands,” Wayne LaPierre didn’t say defiantly as he scurried away.
  • A mentor of mine once wrote something that to me characterizes voters’ mindset today:  “His head always felt about to ache, but never began to.”  Everyone’s been so on edge for such a long time about a pending recession, so the positive economic climate has been ignored to harden ourselves for the expected impact.  We’ve just not yet had that moment of realization that the pain isn’t on the horizon.
  • Donald Trump has never claimed that he didn’t commit the crimes he’s accused of; he’s claiming they’re not crimes because HE did them.  That’s royalty, not citizenship.
  • That report of Trump receiving $7.8 million from foreign governments while in office?  It’s based on Trump’s own corporate records, and who can believe them?  If $7.8 million were traceable, how many millions weren’t?
  • Why don’t these “heritage preservation enthusiasts” work to safeguard the important parts of local culture, like the use of the word “trousers” or the farm-fresh taste of Mrs. McCarthy’s award-winning strawberry scones instead of demanding honors for the vilest people in history?
  • In the Super Bowl of Humanity:  Colin Kaepernick taking a knee for social justice > Aaron Rodgers’ batshit nuttery.
  • Make that 2,207,800,000 more reasons why I believe the Trump family was unduly influenced by foreign leaders while in office.  Besides the treason, I mean.
  • Scientists say they found the first extinction of a fish species directly caused by human activity.  We weren’t satisfied with wiping out mammal and bird species; we got the Triple Crown of Destruction.
  • The beauty of Debussy’s Suite bergamasque –perhaps best known popularly for its third movement, “Clair de lune,” the soundtrack of one of the last scenes of Ocean’s Eleven filmed at the Caesar’s fountains–is enthralling.  Every life is better after hearing that piece.
  • Here’s to Ray Epps suing Tucker Carlson out of existence.  Now sentenced, Epps should sue for everything Carlson owns.  After all, Tucker’s empire expanded by exploiting baseless Epps-based conspiracies about January 6th; everything Tucker has came at Epps’ expense.
  • The Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld experiment–turning Primetime into Bro Time–on Fox is an abject failure.  The shows are not generating audience or excitement.  Their attempts to stoke controversy are so embarrassing they don’t even rate coverage.  Even Fox’s build-in audience base who thrived on O’Reilly and Carlson have jumped ship.  Fox needs a new course, and Hannity headed to Florida is just another sign of rats prepping to abandon the ship.
  • Just a thought, but if Trump’s appointees to the Supreme Court want to add legitimacy to their appointments and not appear to be lackeys to some future dictatorship, they should flex their lifetime-appointment power and reject Trump’s 14th Amendment argument.  Not just because it’s the right thing to do; do it because that tenure exists only because the dictatorship doesn’t.
  • There is a non-zero chance that the woman who narrates the Calm app is covertly programming a cult.
  • My interest in cooking was definitely shaped by cooking shows. Growing up, it was Julia Child (of course), but also, “The Galloping Gourmet.”  Then the (disgraced) Frugal Gourmet and (disgraced) Justin Wilson.  Cable television nationalized America’s food in a way rivaled only by refrigeration, sharing dishes and recipes nationally with shows like “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and even America’s rip-off of Japan’s classic “Iron Chef.”  (“Chopped,” while highlighting various techniques, really is too focused on mid-Atlantic/New England chefs.)
  • Preacher Johnson and his tent revival troupe of grifters hitting the Southern border is just another demonstration of the dearth of GOP policies:  all flash, no substance.
