The third-place finisher in this week’s Miami-Dade, Florida County Mayoral primary, MAGA influencer Alex Otaola, has demanded a recount after losing by 46 percent to incumbent Daniella Levine Cava, who took more than 50 percent and thus automatically won reelection, the Miami Herald reports
“It’s impossible, impossible that Daniella Levine Cava, who has done an awful job over the last four years, got more votes than when no one knew her,” said the Cuban-born right winger Otaola at a “victory party” for fans at his farm in Homestead on Wednesday night, adding that the county’s “electoral health” depended on a recount. Though Tuesday was the primary, the county mayor’s office is officially non-partisan and under state law the general election is canceled automatically when a candidate wins a majority. Which Levine Cava did, pulling in 57.9 percent at 163,597 votes to runner up Manny Cid’s 23 percent at 64,985 and Otaola’s third place 11.8 percent at 33,252 votes.
Miami-Dade Assistant Deputy Supervisor of Elections Vanessa Innocent on Wednesday responded to Otaola campaign manager Andy Santana’s demand for a recount with an “lol, no,” pointing to state law allowing for recounts when a race is decided by less than half a percentage point. “Recounts are not conducted by request,” Innocent wrote in an email replying to Santana’s plea asserting a review was “essential” to ensure the integrity of elections “given the close nature of the results.”
