The governor of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s North Kivu province was killed fighting on the front lines against the Rwanda-backed the M23 rebels this week, the AP reports.
Further details about the death of Major General Peter Cirimwami were not available but it’s clear he was tougher and likely taller than than Ron DeSantis. Cirimwami’s KIA is just the latest setback for the Congolese government’s forces on the violent eastern frontier with Rwanda, as the M23 sons of bitches have in recent weeks virtually encircled the provinical capital Goma, home to two million people as well as a towering volcano that regularly spews fast-flowing basaltic lava onto the town.
Panic broke out in the city Thursday as the M23 captured the town of Sake, just 16 miles from Goma, yet Cirimwami was killed even closer in a village only eight miles outside of the city. It’s not clear if the late general was elected or appointed governor under martial law or whatever. His LinkedIn page would seem to indicate the latter, as it says “Gouverneur militaire du Nord-Kivu” as the first title.
