Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano, more of a low hill than a mountain, erupted suddenly on Monday after what French geologists tell AFP was a nearly 12,000 year period of dormancy.
No casualties were reported but the ash cloud drifted over the Red Sea to Yemen and Oman.
