A fragment of a missile that struck a civilian apartment building in Kyiv Monday has “For Belgorod” scribbled on it–a likely reference to the attack at a military staging and training base in Russian territory that was attacked by two gunmen over the weekend, leaving at least 11 dead, Reuters reports.
The two gunmen were killed in the attack that happened Saturday at a base about 25 miles from the Ukrainian border. The attackers opened fire on a group of unarmed conscripts who were preparing to deploy to the Ukrainian front lines.
Monday’s missile attack on the Kyiv apartment building killed four, including a pregnant woman. It was part of an ongoing series of rocket and missile attacks throughout Ukraine in apparent retaliation for the bombing of the Russian bridge to Crimea. Although many of the Russian attacks are hitting infrastructure targets throughout Ukraine, a number of missiles appear to target civilian centers.
