At least seven Floridians are dead and 28 more are sick with Vibrio vulnificus aka “flesh eating bacteria” infections in the areas affected by Hurricane Ian, as the nasty little bug seeps into minor wounds on people wading around in the floodwaters, the New York Times reports.
“When you have standstill water in environments such as tropical Florida, it creates a perfect cocktail for these bacteria to develop,” said Florida Health Department spokeswoman Jae Williams.
