Moore County, North Carolina declared a state of emergency and set a 9 p.m. curfew Monday with about 40,000 people still without power after an act of sabotage destroyed two electrical substations with gunfire, CBS News reports.
Although officials have not yet identified a suspect or a motive, alt-reich activists online have claimed the attack was to disrupt a drag show scheduled for Saturday night at a bar in a county community. While there is no public evidence of their claim, it’s certainly not out of the question for a conservative extremist to do.
Utilities officials say 38,000 people are currently out of power and will be until both substations can be replaced. The electrical utilities were able to reroute power to another 7,000 who had initially been impacted.
