Jamain Stephens, a 20-year-old senior defensive lineman at California University of Pennsylvania, died Tuesday of COVID, USA Today reports. He is reportedly the first college football player to die of the disease.
Stephens was the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Jamain Stephens. He went to Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh before attending the D-II college, where he majored in business administration and was scheduled to graduate from this spring.
It is unclear how Stephens contracted the disease. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has suspended all fall sports this year.
“Jamain was such a wonderful student with a smile on his face every time you saw him,” California University of Pennsylvania athletic director Dr. Karen Hjerpe said in a statement. “His personality was contagious and he made such a positive impact on everyone he met.”
