Saying the regulatory group should focus on performance-enhancing drugs, an NCAA committee recommended the group drop cannabis from its list of banned substances, allowing student-athletes who indulge to continue to compete, the Associated Press reports.
The NCAA started conducting regular drug tests on athletes in the 1980s as steroid scandals swept through sports. With marijuana becoming legal in more states, schools on the Division II and Division III levels asked the association to revisit the issue of cannabis use meaning a ban on the athlete.
