A New York City police officer has been charged as operating as an “intelligence asset” for the Chinese government to surveil Tibetan immigrants, the Associated Press reports.
Baimadajie Angwang, a 33-year-old naturalized US citizen from Tibet, reported to handlers at the People’s Republic of China consulate in New York City “potential threats to the PRC in the New York metropolitan area,” court papers say.
The Chinese government has undertaken a campaign of oppression against Tibetans, who consider themselves independent of China.
