Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the former mayor of Mexico City, has won the majority left-wing Moreno Party’s presidential nominee in the upcoming elections, virtually assuring her of becoming Mexico’s first female president, the Associated Press reports.
Sheinbaum won the election by double-digit margins over her nearest competitor, Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, in five Party votes. She’ll take over for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is term-limited to one six-year stint.
