Fox “News” host Chris Wallace, the moderator of Tuesday’s presidential debate between Democratic nominee Joe Biden and GOP candidate Donald Trump, thought that the debate would go swimmingly when the two candidates interacted during the first question on the Supreme Court, according to an interview with the Los Angeles Times via Yahoo.
“My initial reaction was, ‘This is great. They’re going to go at it, and I can take the evening off,'” Wallace said. “But you know, it became clear at a certain point that the president wasn’t planning to back off and was going to keep interrupting throughout the evening.”
Wallace said Trump’s frequent interrupts seemed to be a ploy to knock Biden off his game, but Biden didn’t bite. Even though the strategy obviously wasn’t working, Trump continued butting in on Biden’s responses.
“Trump never went to Plan B,” Wallace said. “He just stayed on Plan A the entire evening, and I don’t think it served him especially well.”
After the debate, Biden spoke with Wallace briefly backstage. Biden approached Wallace and whispered in his ear: “I bet you didn’t think you were signing up for a boxing match.”
Trump simply nodded in his direction and left. But he began a fuselage of Tweet disparaging the moderator and claiming he was working to help Biden.
Asked if he expected the attacks, Wallace said, “Have you been around the last four years?”
