A reconstituted group of MAGA anti-constitutional obstructionists launched a new recall effort to unseat Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, saying Newsom has already abandoned the state to sate his higher ambitions, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
“Governor Newsom has abandoned the state to advance his presidential ambitions, leaving behind a $68 billion budget deficit and a public safety, immigration and education crisis,” the group, Hotel Rescue California, stated in a press release.
Newsom didn’t seem worried about the seventh attempt to recall him, saying, “Earlier today, the same Trump Republicans who led the recall effort against me in 2021 announced they are launching another recall campaign against me this year. We beat them once–handily–and we’ll do it again if we must. But I can’t do it alone.”
In California, a governor can be held up for a recall vote if 12% of the number of voters in the last statewide election–or roughly 1.5 million registered voters–sign a petition. This is the seventh effort against Newsom; five failed to qualify for a vote and the sixth failed by a nearly 2-to-1 vote. Gray Davis was the last successful recall in California in 2003, who lost to actor-turned-less-malevolent-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, who himself faced no fewer than five recall efforts.
