In an interview on Fox “Business” this morning, President Trump echoed the fascistic actions of autocrats by claiming that he has federal law enforcement watching officials in New Mexico and Nevada for potential voter fraud.
According to the Washington Post, Trump told Maria Bartiromo that Nevada officials were “cheaters.” Trump also complained that Nevada’s Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak made it difficult for him to hold a campaign rally in the state last month, during the coronavirus pandemic.
“And he’s in charge of the ballots,” Trump said of Sisolak. “And there’s bad things happening out there. Now, we have law enforcement watching him, very strong. U.S. attorney is watching him very strongly. The U.S. marshal is watching.”
Trump went on to claim that Nevada law does not require voters to sign their mail-in ballots; that claim is a lie.
While not naming New Mexico Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham specifically, Trump claimed that the federal government was watching an unnamed male official. It’s very possible Trump did not know the governor is a woman.
“In New Mexico, a state that I think we can win, we have the U.S. marshal and the U.S. attorney watching him,” Trump said during the interview. “So it’s not — it’s not easy for them because we’ve got people watching. Nobody ever had.”
