Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXXXIX

  • There’s a lot to mock in politics on both sides of the aisle.  You can have fun with a lot of things.  The drama gives you a lot to laugh at.  But nothing is more grotesque than the exploitation of the graves of the honored dead who defended this country by a grinning con man set on undermining the Constitution.
  • Trump’s Kennedy bump in the polls has been predictably underwhelming, hasn’t it?
  • When you start shoving staff at a national cemetery, you stop being campaign staff and you start being Brown Shirts.
  • It was in no way overwhelming, but that was the point.  The Harris-Walz interview was happily normal, with politicians answering questions in normal politician ways–sometimes being direct sometimes slightly obfuscating–but never once bemoaning about how personally attacked they are and what a victim they’ve become by campaigning for the highest office in the land.
  • America was so anti-Communist it scheduled the holiday celebrating labor not on May Day, when most of the rest of the world recognizes workers, to September. They also added “In God We Trust,” which conservatives swear was a quote from George Washington’s own lips.
  • The quietest news you won’t hear about this week is the rising tide of economists who are quietly saying the US has–once again–likely averted a recession.  Say what you will about Joe Biden’s reelection probability, his term in office steadied the nation through a potentially turbulent time.
  • It’s funny how quiet all those people who insisted Hunter Biden’s dealings in Ukraine were corrupting to the Presidency are about Jared Kushner’s $2 billion gift from Saudi Arabia.
  • A favorite Trump disgrace many forget:  while President, a judge ordered Trump to shut down his namesake “charity,” pay $2 million in fines, and admit to multiple misuses of charitable donations…again: while he was President… and the Republicans still let him run for reelection.
  • It’s so cute to watch conservatives whine and cry about input the Biden Administration gave social media platforms about Covid, claiming the feds were “censoring” the platforms, but they forget Trump literally threatened to pull the licenses of television networks that broadcast bad news about him.
  • As much as I’m going to hate it, I hope we spend the next eight years with news anchors furiously analyzing the color and style of the President’s various outfits, which will not be a blue suit and red tie.
  • Jack Smith took a smaller set of evidence to a completely different pool of grand jurors and still secured the same four counts in an indictment against a former president for undermining the Constitution.
  • The ousted chair of the Michigan Republican Party was escorted out of the Party’s meeting this week; a group tried to force out an entire county delegation to replace them with alternative delegates; and the group’s finances are in turmoil.  And Trump’s chances to win the state hinge on these people.
  • I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump’s campaign hires people to put campaign signs along the route he drives to get to his rally sites from the airport, just to appease his ego.  He’s that temperamental.
  • Those teachers who greeted your kids in prepared classrooms this week (or maybe they will next week) didn’t walk into already cleaned and decorated classrooms themselves.  They spent the week prepping the room, attending meetings, and planning lesson–many unpaid for that work. Many have taken on the cost of a master’s degree to start a $35,000 per year job.  It’s amazing dedication from people who clearly want to destroy the minds of future generations and turn them all gay trans, like Republicans would have you believe.
  • There is no situation in which soft bacon is better.  Bacon doesn’t have to be so dry it snaps, but it should be crispy.  Cooking bacon correctly is an art as tricky as cooking a steak, and moreso when you consider different cuts and fat content.  But boy, when done right, it is a treat to the senses.
  • We’ve got a family enigma that involves searching for photos of a great-grandmother, an actress in the silent movie era, to see if she wore a specific piece of jewelry that carries some lore.  It’s like Antiques Roadshow meets a family slide show meets CSI: Kodak.
  • As you’re enjoying your day off this long weekend, remember to thank a Union member.
