France became the seventh nation to top one million coronavirus cases Friday, as a new wave of infections spread through the country and the number of new daily confirmed cases exceeded 40,000 for the first time, the Associated Press reports.
The surge of new cases are stressing the nation’s hospital resources, with 42% of intensive care unit beds filled with coronavirus patients, including 64% in the Paris region.
French President Emmanuel Macron has instituted a curfew in the eight major urban areas around the nation, banning unnecessary travel from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The curfew impacts 46 million of France’s 67 million residents.
