For some unknown reason, a large portion of the North Lawn of the White House, which borders Pennsylvania Avenue, was dug up, removing the grass over a large portion of the area, CNN’s Betsy Klein reports via Twitter.

The North Lawn, sometimes called the Front Lawn of the White House because of its location on Pennsylvania Avenue, faces the North Portico of the White House, where dignitaries are typically welcomed into the mansion. It’s typically the area media congregate to do remove broadcasts from outside the White House.
There has been no public notice of work planned for the area, but a Bobcat, a small front-end loader/tractor, was seen in the area.
