New York Congressman Sean Patrick Mahoney has been elected chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the group tasked with defending and expanding the Democrats’ majority in the House, Politico reports.
Mahoney defeated California’s Tony Cárdenas to succeed Illinois’ Cheri Bustos for the chairmanship. He’ll have a tough job ahead of the 2022 midterm elections as the moderate faction of the Party must unify with the progressive wing to maintain and expand the slim majority in the House.
Mahoney was first elected to Congress in 2012 for the New York 18th District, which includes the northern suburbs of New York City. He sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence as well as the Agriculture Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
An openly gay member of Congress, Mahoney is seen as a strong opponent of outgoing President Trump.
