A former member of the Navy’s Judge Advocate General Corps has filed a petition with the Florida Bar Association seeking the disbarment of Republican Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, citing his participation in an “act of sedition.”
Pam Keith, the defeated Democratic nominee for Congress from Florida’s 18th District, filed the petition with the Florida Bar Tuesday morning, stating that Gaetz had committed no fewer than three previous acts worthy of sanction, but his support of the disenfranchisement of voters around the country merits the most severe punishment the Bar can levy.
“But Mr. Gaetz’s latest transgression is one that truly warrants loss of the right to practice law in the State of Florida. In this latest episode, Mr. Gaetz willingly participated in an act of sedition, and an illegal and immoral effort to disenfranchise millions of American voters,” Keith explained. “I ask that the Bar fully investigate Mr. Gaetz’s actions, whether or not they believe themselves to have authority to discipline him at this time, and that the Bar publish its findings with respect to Mr. Gatez’s [sic] actions and choices. I maintain that no lawyer should act in furtherance of sedition or destruction of the Constitution of the United States.”
Gaetz has publicly supported state legislatures in key swing states voiding the popular vote to assign Electoral College electors who would vote for lame duck president Donald Trump, the incumbent who lost the popular vote by 7 million and who lost the Electoral College in a self-described “landslide.”
The petition cites Gaetz’s endorsement of such tactics as a violation of his oath of office and an effort to commit a fraud upon the Courts, sanctionable actions according to Bar ethics requirements.
