Random thoughts Friday, Volume VI

  • First, I’m going to apologize for spending more time than I typically would on a single topic–the impeachment trial.  I’ve been in it up to my neck, and it’s the primary thing on my mind.
  • Perhaps the most damning part of Trump’s actions during the January 6th domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol was that Trump stayed in the White House.  As a mob invaded the Capitol and pipe bombs were found around Washington, Trump was never evacuated to The Bunker or a secure location.  This is evidence that he knew the mob worked for him.
  • Trump should consider himself lucky he’s only facing impeachment.  Given the evidence, in any other jurisdiction in the country, he’d be facing involuntary manslaughter charges.  Even still, he faces millions of dollars in wrongful death civil suits.
  • Never trust a man who wears a pocket square to his day job… unless he’s a maitre d’ or a ballroom dancer.
  • Republican arguments that Trump’s conviction is unnecessary because he’ll never be elected to office again is undermined by the fact that most of these same people said Trump would never be nominated (and then elected) in the first place.
  • Who gets to speak at the 2024 Republican National Convention:  Trump or Pence?  The bigger question, I suppose:  Will the GOP erase all memory of Trump by 2024, un-personing him like they did to GW Bush?  To date, GW Bush is the only president of the modern era who has not addressed the Party convention at least once.  Will the GOP make it 2-fer-2?
  • I’m curious why the House impeachment managers didn’t concentrate more on the second specific act outlined in the impeachment article:  the intimidation call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.  Did they know the Fulton Co. district attorney was investigating?
  • My dog’s favorite toy is a large pink blowfish, which he uses as his fetch toy, a pillow and a reward for when we do things he wants.  It’s his Swiss Army toy, and he is a very smart dog.
  • Michael van der Veen should be brought up on Bar Association ethics charges for accusing the House managers engaged in prosecutorial misconduct during the trial.
  • The Valentine’s Day decorations at the White House are a lovely sign of the stable mental health of its occupants.
  • Eugene Goodman, a Black Capitol Police officer, was faced with an angry mob of white people who had been chanting about murdering people, and he didn’t even pull his gun let alone fire a shot.  Imagine the carnage that would have happened in any city in the US if the races of those involved had been reversed.  And why can’t “street” police officers be trained to hold off on gun use as the Capitol Police are?
  • Chips (in order of preference):  Casino, potato, nacho and pita.  Far, far down the list are cow.
  • Fox News intentionally neglecting to cover the impeachment trial is exactly why they’ve plummeted to third place in cable ratings.  Not covering a major news story–and thinking that that will make it go away–is driving its viewers to other networks where they can get information about the fourth impeachment trial in American history.
  • Jason Chaffetz obviously doesn’t believe in “free speech.”  He believes in “$1.99 per minute” speech.
  • The two breakout stars of the impeachment trial:  Stacey Plaskett, delegate from the US Virgin Islands, and Joe Neguse, Congressman from Colorado.  Jamie Raskin may have been a revelation to some of you, but he’s always been a spectacular lawyer.
  • I watched, maybe, a quarter of the Super Bowl (which was just last Sunday).  Nothing was compelling about the game, or the commercials, which is typically why I watch.
