The Indonesian government reports that one of its submarines is missing and it’s undertaking a search-and-rescue mission north of the island of Bali, the Associated Press reports.
One of five diesel-powered submarines in the Indonesian Navy, the KRI Nanggala 402, with 53 submariners on board, disappeared approximately 60 miles north of Bali. The Indonesians have asked for assistance in the search from Australia and Singapore, whose ships typically operate in the region.
The German-built Cakra-class submarine was reportedly participating in a torpedo test at the time of its disappearance. It has been in operation since 1981.
