Republican Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson tried to claim that construction of a pipeline between Russia and Germany, the Nord Stream 2, was stopped during the Trump Administration. Johnson tried Republican-splaining to Secretary of State Tony Blinken that “we stopped it the last time” it was raised during the Trump term.
Johnson stated that Blinken’s rationale for putting sanctions on the people who will benefit from the pipeline, as opposed to sanctioning the pipeline itself, “literally makes no sense,” demonstrating that Johnson doesn’t understand what “literally” and “sense” mean.
As Blinken explained, the Biden Administration inherited the fact that the pipeline was “95% complete” when they took office, and that Nord Stream 2’s completion was inevitable.
“We stopped it last time,” Johnson said before trying to move on.
“No, in fact, we didn’t,” Blinken stated. “By definition.”
As of May 2021, just 100 kilometers of the 2,339 kilometer pipeline needed to be finished. The portion of the pipeline that ran through Germany started construction in 2018.
