The Indiana junior high school student who tested positive for the coronavirus on the first day of in-person classes had been sent to school by his parents even though he had not yet received the results of the mandated test, the Washington Post reports.
The Hancock County, Ind., Health Department informed Greenfield-Central Junior High that the student had tested positive, prompting the school to immediately remove the student from classes and isolate him in the school nurse’s office as officials tried to identify where he had been and who he had contact with.
The school worked to disinfect the areas where the student traveled, and the school has reportedly asked more than a dozen students to self-isolate. The school district, however, will continue with in-person instruction.
“This really does not change our plans,” Olin told the Associated Press. “We knew that we would have a positive case at some point in the fall. We simply did not think it would happen on Day One.”
