Three men who had been missing for three days have been rescued from an uninhabited island in the Pacific after a passing aircraft spotted the SOS they had written into the sand, the Associated Press reports.
The men had embarked on a 27-mile trip in a 23-foot boat when they apparently went off course and ran out of fuel. (It is not known if it was a three-hour tour.)
The ship aground on the shore of a charted desert isle Pikelot Island in the Micronesia archipelago, more than 100 miles away from their destination.
At the request of Guam officials, US and Australian forces joined in the search. Crew from the Australian naval ship Canberra spotted the message, and a Australian military helicopter landed on the isle to locate the men, who were reportedly in good shape.
The Australians provided the men with food and water, and the men will be picked up by a Micronesian patrol vessel.
